The Waiver Wire: Gameweek 8

Those who think Fantrax Leagues are won and lost at the draft are wrong. Very wrong.

In fact this is where the winners will be winners because of their sharp eye for a bargain and the losers will be losers because…well, they ignore the Waiver Wire.

Each week, we will analyse those low ownership players that could win you your match up or even become a mainstay in your roster for weeks and months. Here is what the Gameweek 8 waiver wire has to offer!

Jose Holebas | Watford (DEF) | 42% owned

It’s not often that a player with a negative points tally features in our Waiver Wire article. Clearly Jose Holebas is an exception.

Holebas and Watford have had a horrendous start to the new season and the Greek full back’s total of – 0.5 certainly wasn’t helped by the -12 scored in the Man City demolition.

Watford’s Gameweek 8 matchup with Sheffield United is, quite simply, a must win game for the Hornets at this early stage. A clean sheet and attacking contributions will be expected from veteran Holebas who is normally very dependable in Fantrax scoring.

Matt Lowton | Burnley (DEF) | 38% owned

We tipped Matt Lowton to score well in Gameweek 7 and, thanks to an assist for Chris Wood’s equaliser, he did.

Burnley are solid defensively and Lowton looks good going forward. A visit from out of form Everton should give a few Burnley assets a good chance of scoring well, Lowton included.

Marvelous Nakamba | Aston Villa (MID) | 3% owned

Apart from having undoubtedly the best name since Lomano Tresor Lua Lua, Marvelous Nakamba has been well received in the Premier League thanks to his combative nature and creativity.

I’m resisting the temptation to use the predictable phrase “Nakamba has been marvelous”, but he’s certainly not been bad. Three key passes in the draw against Burnley contributed towards a 10.5 point return without a goal or assist.

Nakamba is scoring well and at 3% ownership, is almost certainly available on your Waiver Wire ahead of Villa’s trip to Norwich.

Chris Wood | Burnley (FWD) | 45% owned

Last time I tipped Chris Wood in this article it was met with a series of puzzled looks/comments. Therefore, the smugness I felt when the big New Zealander scored twice four days later was all the more sweeter!

Wood seems to score goals in gluts and three goals in two games suggest he may be going through one of those purple patches. If he’s on your Waiver Wire he is well worth an add.

Danny Welbeck | Watford (FWD) | 11% owned

Danny Welbeck is back. Again.

It’s hard to think of many modern day footballers who have worse look with serious injuries than Danny Welbeck.

Having recovered from his latest one, the former United and Arsenal man has been given another chance by Watford and was awarded with his first Premier League start on Saturday having scored in the Carabao Cup.

Despite failing to find the net against Wolves, Welbeck registered a respectable 8.5 points in Fantrax. I touched upon the fact that this is a must win game for Watford against Sheffield United this Saturday. Welbeck will be charged with the task of scoring the goals should he be given another start.
